Counterscarp (COUNT'r SCAR'p) The wall opposite the scarp on the outerside of a ditch. Usually lined with stone blocks and mortar. The stone wall prevents the enemy from tunneling an entrance into the ditch and hinders the retreat of anyone attacking the fort's main walls.
