Casemate (KAYSE mate) or Casement (KAYSE mint)
Bomb-proof chambers in a fort from which cannon are fired through windows, called embrasures. Fort Adams has a single casemate on the north, east and south sides and a double casemate on the west side. The double casemate, supporting two rows of cannon, faces Narragansett Bay. By combining the guns in the casemates with lighter guns mounted on the terreplein, Fort Adams could have three rows of guns facing the Bay, and two rows on all other sides. |
