VOTE YES ON QUESTION #4
Help Open Fort Adams for Everyone The
November ballot will contain an Open Space and Recreation Bond issue
that will enhance public access and enjoyment of three beautiful sites
on Narragansett Bay: For the past two years the Fort Adams Trust has been exploring the feasibility of providing unrestricted public access to the interior of the Fort for the first time since the Fort was transferred to the State in 1965. Because of unsafe conditions inside the Fort, access is currently by guided tour only or while attending special events. While many thousands of visitors go on tours of the Fort each summer, many more could enjoy the amazing features of our country’s largest coastal fortification if access to the interior was unrestricted.
Visit our Main photo gallery for pictures of previous restoration projects The Open Space and Recreation bond issue would provide $1.5 million for the purpose of securing interior areas of the Fort surrounding the 6.5 acre Parade, and creating additional interpretive aids for self guided tours. Future phases of an “Open the Fort” campaign will address the rarely seen outerworks, opening them to public access as well. The Bond issue will also provide monies to acquire 80 acres of the former amusement park at Rocky Point for a public park, and to secure the former “Shooters” site at India Point Park for public ownership and use for water related activities such as a marina and water ferry terminal.
