Tour The Fort

Our traditional hour long guided tour takes you from the top of the Fort walls to the depths of the underground listening tunnels. 



Hourly Guided Tours 10:00am-4:00pm



On tour you will:

  • View the Quarters where officers and their families lived.
  • Ascend to the scenic overlook for a breathtaking view of Newport Harbor & Narragansett Bay.
  • Learn about past and future plans for restoration.
  • Delve beneath the walls of the Fort into our underground tunnels.
  • Experience over 180 years of American History, military culture, architecture & engineering.

  Please dress accordingly and understand that tours may be canceled due to weather.

**Self guided tours do not include access to the underground tunnels or overlooks. Self guided tour tickets may be upgraded for a guided tour taken on the same day.  Self guided tours may be suspended without notice.  Reasons  for suspension may include but are not limited to weather, special events, festival or event setup and fort restoration.  Call (401) 619-1511

Grab your cold weather gear and come experience Fort Adams in the "Off Season"

November 1st - December 31st, Guided tours depart from the Fort Adams State Park Visitor Center daily at noon and 2:00pm & Weekends Hourly 10am-4pm; Ticket office opens 15min prior to tour.  View the Officer's Quarters, enjoy breathtaking views of Newport Harbor and explore the underground tunnels.

Tours are primarily outdoor involving nearly 1 mile of walking.  Proper dress and footwear required.  Heavy snow/ rain may modify or cancel tours.

Saturdays & Sundays at 10:00am (Memorial Day Weekend- Labor Day) take a guided tour adventure through the Fort’s complex land defenses.  This Forts formidable landscape architecture is part of what makes Fort Adams the most complex coastal fort in the United States.  This tour takes you through a first person attack scenario placing you in the position of an attacker.*

*Tour involves nearly one mile of walking, including several inclines and declines often over uneven ground. Proper footwear required.

Our 6 1/2 acre parade field at the center of the Fort is now open for self guided touring.  You are encouraged to discover the Fort for yourself with the help of our many interpretative panels.  Or you can simply enjoy the majesty of the Fort with a picnic.
